Half Of Police Shootings Involve Dogs

Half of intentional shootings by police involve dogs, study says

There has never been a documented case of a dog killing a police officer.

The same can’t be said for police killing dogs.

Every year, hundreds — if not thousands — of animals, mostly canines, are killed by police or animal-control officers. According to the National Canine Research Council, up to half of the intentional shootings by police involve dogs.

  1. You know, I’ve been following folks like Popehat and Radley Balko for a while now, so I knew that a lot of dogs are getting shot, but…

Half. HALF! That doesn’t just disgust me, that genuinely surprises me. It also really worries me.

One interesting justification I’ve heard for laws against animal cruelty is that there’s a sort of trickle-down effect with brutality. That is, if someone is cruel to animals, they will eventually be cruel to people, too, so even if you don’t give a fig for animal rights, you should still support punishing people who hurt animals, because if we don’t stop sick freaks from cutting up cats, they’ll work their way up to cutting up humans. The logic isn’t ironclad, but there are plenty of cases of serial killers getting their start on animals, so it’s worth considering.

Now, with that in mind, let’s reflect on the wider implications of all this dog-shooting going on…
